A team from Sub-Salt Solutions Limited, led by Professor Mike Warner of Imperial College, came first in a seismic inversion contest at SEG. The model produced by the Sub-Salt team came closest to the true, underlying model. Several other teams from universities and major processing companies also entered the competition.
The problem was specially prepared for SEG by Chevron and required the inversion of synthetic data to reveal the (previously unseen) original model. The synthetic seismic involved dealing with most of the complex issues encountered in seismic inversion of real data.
Sub-Salt’s latest AWI and Full Wave Inversion techniques were employed to decipher the underlying model, including inverting reflection data. AWI offers the potential to invert reflection data via an automated inversion procedure, with clearer images and savings in computer time.
